Hello Members,

Today is day 44 of the 120-day legislative session. Last night near midnight, several BDR’s dropped. After much pushing some important bills became a reality and now we hit the ground running. Our mission is to get the bills to hearing and to move them to successful conclusions for our members.

Senate Bill 403, sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Ford and Senator Mark Manendo, seeks to make appropriations from the State Highway Fund and the State General Fund for the purpose of increasing the compensating of the Nevada Highway Patrol troopers by on pay grade or typically 5%. This is in addition to the 4% increase that all state employees will receive over the next two years. As of right now there is no hearing set for his bill, we will keep you informed and let you know when this moves. Rick and I along with the Nevada Law Enforcement Coalition and State Wide Union Coalition continue to push legislator and the Governor’s officer to increase compensation for all state law enforcement, but SB 403 does deal specifically with NHP.

Senate Bill 383, sponsored by Assemblyman James Ohrenschall, would require POST to train officers in the “constitutional and lawful use of force.” Odd, I thought we did this already.

Senate Bill 333, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Michael Roberson, is the counter bill to SB 223 (the “sanctuary state” bill). SB 333 specifically permits law enforcement to take such actions as are necessary to enforce immigration laws in assisting Federal Law Enforcement.

There are almost 900 bills from both houses that have dropped. Several more are anticipated by next Monday. We are watching all of them and we will continue to report to our members.

Please make it a point to visit the Nevada Legislature website. Go to www.leg.state.nv.us/ follow the instructions under “share your opinion on bills.” You can look up each bill by their respective number. If you have anything that you want me to pass on to any legislative member of either house, please forward that to me.

Stay tuned for more information as is comes out. If you need to reach me, please call me at 775-720-4304 or email me at michaelgiurlani@sbcglobal.net.

Stay Safe
